A significant investigation has been initiated following the discovery of more human remains in two locations in Greater Manchester.

This comes subsequent to the finding of a torso at a nature reserve.

On April 4, a major investigation commenced after a passer-by stumbled upon a lower back, buttocks, and a thigh wrapped in multiple sheets of cellophane at Kersal Dale. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) revealed their belief that the victim was a man in his 60s from Salford, and his family has been notified.

Recently, additional remains were discovered by officers at Blackleach Reservoir and by a dog walker at Linneyshaw Colliery Wood, both situated in Salford, on Sunday and Saturday evening, respectively. The victim is believed to have been acquainted with two men, aged 42 and 68, from Salford, who were arrested on suspicion of murder on Thursday and remain in custody, according to the force. A 20-year-old man, initially detained on suspicion of murder, was subsequently released on bail pending further inquiries.

Detective Superintendent Lewis Hughes, of GMP’s Serious Crime Division, stated, "Today we have found human remains at the reservoir, and last night, a dog walker found a package containing human remains at Linnyshaw Colliery Wood." He added, "Forensic tests will continue to establish whose remains they are, but we are very confident that it is the same victim. We have also been searching a house in Winton, where we believe the victim and the two suspects lived. We have found evidence to show the victim died there, most likely in late March."

"While this is significant progress, we know that there is still some way to go to complete this investigation," continued DS Hughes. "I also recognize the details of this case will be particularly distressing to the people of Salford, and beyond, and most importantly to the man's heartbroken family." He assured that local officers would continue patrolling the affected areas and updates would be provided when new information arises.

DS Hughes urged local communities to report anything suspicious they may have seen, heard, or witnessed in the crime scene areas. Although formal identification of the remains has not yet occurred, Greater Manchester Police confirmed it should be completed by next week.

Preventing murders is a complex task that involves various strategies at individual, community, and societal levels. While it's impossible to entirely eradicate the occurrence of murders, implementing certain measures can significantly reduce their frequency. Here are some approaches to preventing murders:

  • Strengthen Law Enforcement: Effective law enforcement is crucial for preventing and deterring murders. This includes increasing police presence in high-crime areas, improving investigative techniques to solve crimes quickly, and enhancing cooperation between law enforcement agencies.

  • Address Socioeconomic Factors: Many murders are linked to socioeconomic issues such as poverty, unemployment, lack of education, and inequality. Addressing these underlying factors can help reduce the incidence of violent crime. Providing access to education, job opportunities, affordable housing, and social services can empower individuals and communities and reduce their vulnerability to crime.

  • Promote Conflict Resolution and Mediation: Teaching conflict resolution skills and promoting peaceful ways to resolve disputes can help prevent murders that arise from interpersonal conflicts. Mediation programs and community-based initiatives can provide constructive ways for individuals to address conflicts without resorting to violence.

  • Reduce Access to Firearms: Firearms are often used in murders, so implementing stricter gun control measures can help reduce the number of homicides. This includes background checks for gun purchases, restrictions on gun ownership for certain individuals (such as convicted felons and those with a history of domestic violence), and measures to prevent illegal gun trafficking.

  • Address Mental Health Issues: Addressing mental health issues and providing support and treatment for individuals with mental illnesses can help prevent violent behavior. This includes improving access to mental health services, reducing stigma around mental illness, and providing support for individuals at risk of harming themselves or others.

  • Strengthen Community Relationships: Building strong, cohesive communities can help prevent murders by fostering a sense of belonging and social support. Community policing initiatives, neighborhood watch programs, and community engagement activities can help strengthen relationships between residents and law enforcement and promote trust and cooperation within communities.

  • Promote Education and Awareness: Raising awareness about the consequences of violence and promoting non-violent behaviors through education and public awareness campaigns can help prevent murders. This includes educating young people about the dangers of violence, teaching conflict resolution skills in schools, and challenging cultural attitudes that glorify or condone violence.

  • Provide Support for Victims and At-Risk Individuals: Providing support services for victims of violence and at-risk individuals can help prevent further incidents. This includes providing counseling, shelter, legal assistance, and other support services to victims of domestic violence, gang violence, and other forms of violence.

By implementing a comprehensive approach that addresses the root causes of violence and promotes peaceful conflict resolution, communities can work towards preventing murders and creating safer environments for all residents.
