How to Start Preparing for Your Summer Getaway

There are few things better than enjoying the warm weather from the comfort of your home away from home.

Caravan vacations are the perfect way to relax away from city life's demands and breathe fresh air.

Caravan owners are at a record high in Australia, with 669,409 Aussies registering new vehicles in 2020. With such high demand for caravan parks, it’s best to prepare early to ensure you enjoy a memorable summer getaway.

1. Research Your Destination

The first thing you should do is research your destination. What will the weather be like? Are there many caravan parks in the area? Do you need to book in advance? Will they allow pets? Knowing where you’re going will help you pack more efficiently and ensure everything goes off without a hitch.

Byron Bay, the Great Ocean Road, and the Barossa Valley are some of Australia’s most popular camping and caravanning spots. And for a good reason. Many caravanners flock to these spots with stunning views, a relaxing beach, and a destination within the heart of nature. If you plan to do the same, you’ll need to book your caravan park early.

If you’re looking for a more secluded camping area, you might get away with a late booking. However, you’ll need to research what there is to do and the best time to visit.

2. Make an Itinerary

Whether you like to turn up for a spontaneous trip or plan every detail, it’s best to get an idea of what there is to do in the area. For example, if you want to try water sports while away and hire a yacht in Sydney Habour, you must remember to pack your swimwear.

Be sure there are various activities, from museums to fishing spots and hiking trails. If you find your itinerary filled up, try to prioritize activities. A packed holiday might be fun, but it’s not the stress-free getaway most want.

Additionally, remember to check out places to shop and eat. While BBQs are part of the charm of camping, you might want to eat out now and then. What’s the restaurant scene like?

3. What Travel Documents do you Need?

Fortunately, if you’re planning a caravan getaway within Australia, you won’t need to organize as many travel documents as flying overseas. However, there are a few travel documents you’ll want to make copies of and take with you.

  • Covid-19 vaccine passport

  • Medical documents if you have special medical or dietary requirements

  • Insurance documents (health, caravan, travel, etc.)

  • Car registration and breakdown cover

4. Caravan out of Storage

When you take your caravan out of storage, it will need a thorough cleaning and service. You might not have used it since the previous summer. Even if you put it away correctly, it’s a long time since you last gave it a bit of TLC.

You’ll want to clean the interior and exterior thoroughly. Crucially, make sure you properly sterilize the water pipes and tanks. When storing for winter, you hopefully drain your water system, but even so, it’s a good idea to clean them before use.

It’s also sensible to organize a professional to service it for you. This will ensure everything works, including water, gas, wheels, and electrical systems. Knowing any repairs needed before hitching up and setting off is best. A wheel alignment will likely be necessary if you haven't had one done for an extended period

Finally, it would help if you restocked the essentials. Make sure you have everything from tinned food to all your bedding packed.

5. Pack Efficiently

As anyone who has ever taken a caravan trip knows, there isn’t a lot of storage. Try to pack your caravan efficiently depending on how long you’re setting off for and how many people accompany you. Create a list of all the essentials. Try to skim off anything you don’t need and use every nook and cranny.

Preparing your summer holiday well will ensure it’s a stress-free adventure. Caravan holidays are ideal relaxing getaways. By planning your trip and servicing your caravan before setting off, you’re guaranteed to enjoy the summer of a lifetime.
