Having an automatic garage door is a good start to make your life much more convenient.

In the rain you don’t need to get out of the car to open the door, keeping you dry. These devices can also be great to give independence to disabled people, who might not be able to operate a manual garage door. However, to make sure that the door opener works you first need to program it, which can be quite difficult. Today we will look at the best ways to program your Wi-Fi garage door opener.

Let’s briefly look at how garage door openers work. When you push the button to open the door, that signal travels to the box in your garage. Once it receives this signal it starts to lift the garage door. When they were first invented, all the signals were the same. However, this caused some security concerns as anyone with a garage door opener could enter your house. To overcome this problem, the technology became more advanced. The signals changed so that only your signal can open your garage door. Currently, the code changes automatically and only the right remote will know the correct signal to send to open the door. Also, it became more convenient to program a wi-fi garage door opener, usually only taking a few minutes. Now that we know a little more about how this technology works and how it has evolved over time, let’s look at some of the most common ways of programming your garage door.

The first method is using DIP switches. This is primarily used in older garage doors, though some companies may still use this system, or a variant of it, today. These systems have a switches in both the box in the garage and in the remote control. You control the signal by either putting these switches up or down. This changes the signal, making it unique to your home. To program these remotes, you need to open the box in the garage and then open the back of the remote. Next, change the combinations of switches, making sure that the sequence matches. The remote should now be programmed. Close the box and the back of the remote and try to open the door to confirm that it works.

The next method involves using the LEARN button on the remote, which should work for most modern garage doors. This allows to use modern technology to improve your security, pairing the remote to the garage. To program a remote using this method, you need to first open the box. Now, find the LEARN button on the box and hold it until the corresponding light box flashes. Once it does this, push the LEARN button on the remote. You might hear a beeping or clicking noise to let you know that it was successful. Now, you should test the remote to make sure that it worked. Generally, garage doors will use one of these two methods. You can find which method to use by reading the product manual, which may also contain instructions specific to your device. Now that we know how to program a wi-fi garage door opener, let’s look at some things you should consider when purchasing replacement remotes.

It’s easy for you to misplace your garage door remote. Thankfully, there are plenty of replacement remotes available that you can choose from, many of which are inexpensive. You should choose either a replacement from the same company that sold you the door or a universal remote, which will work with any garage door. Depending on the type of garage door you have, you can use one of the two methods we discussed to program the new remote. You should be aware that you can only have a limited number of remotes, for many modern doors the limit is usually five. If you reach this limit, you won’t be able to operate the door. To solve this, you can reset the system, so it forgets all the previous codes. To do this, open the box and press the LEARN button and wait until the light stops blinking. Now, you will need to re-program the remote control using the steps that we discussed above. When doing this you should read the instruction manual that comes with the remote, in case there are any intricacies associated with the unit.

We’ve looked at how this technology has evolved over time to require the remote to send a more complex signal to get the unit to open the door. We also talked about some of the most effective ways to program your remote, to help you set-up these systems or replace a lost remote.
