Pros & Cons of Internet of Things

Anuja Lath 08/05/2018 9

The internet of things (IoT) is a trending buzzword that has become a core technology in today’s fast-paced world. IoT is commonly known as a network of physical, electronic devices connected via internet.

Applications of IoT are seen in various domains reflecting the rising significance of IoT. However, the fact remains that there are many challenges and issues related to the use of IoT, and they cannot be ignored. This brings us to the heading of this article: advantages and disadvantages of the internet of things.

Here are some advantages of the internet of things:

Information Access

You can easily access data and information that are sitting far from your location, in real time. This is possible because of the network of devices, a person can access any information sitting from any part of the globe. This makes it very convenient for people to go about their work, even if they are not physically present.

Communication

Better communication is possible over a network of interconnected devices, making it more transparent, which reduces inefficiencies. Processes, where machine have to communicate with each other, are much more efficient and produce better, faster results. The perfect example for this is a machinery in a manufacturing or production unit.

Cost-Effective

As mentioned in the point above, communication between electronic devices is made easier because of IoT. This helps people in daily tasks. Transferring data packets over a connected network save time and money. The same data that would take a long time to transfer can now be done much faster, thanks to IoT.

Automation

Automation is the need of the hour to manage everyday tasks without human intervention. Automating tasks in a business help boost the quality of services and reduce the level of human intervention.

After discussing the main advantages of IoT, here are some of its disadvantages:

Privacy & Security

In today’s tech-driven world, each and every device that an individual uses are connected via the internet. This increases the risk of any leakage of data that might be important. This is a major drawback of sharing information, as confidential information might not be safe & could be hacked by third parties easily.

Complexity

A diverse network that connects various devices is what we call IoT. A single loophole can affect the entire system. This is by far the most complicated aspect of the internet of things that can have a tremendous effect.

Lesser Jobs

With every task being automated, the need for human labour will reduce drastically. This will have a direct impact on employability. As we head into the future of IoT, there will be a visible decline in the hiring process of professionals.

Dependability

We may not notice it, but we are witnessing a major shift in technology and its implementation in everyday lives. There is no doubt that technology is dominating our lifestyle, reflecting human dependability on technology. In case of a bug in the system, there are high chances of every related device getting corrupted.

IoT is a big part of our lives and will only become a more important part of it every day that goes by. We hope you now understand what IoT (Internet of things) is. What is the significance of IoT is and what are its limitations. If we missed out on something, let us know in the comments below!

Not every automated things is IoT.

Perhaps we should redirect more of our creativity, time and money toward helping people living in poverty and other challenging circumstances, before we get to work on fridges that tell you what to eat.

    This is creepy.....

Pretty soon we won't have to bother being born, the "internet of things" will be doing all our thinking and living for us.

    I already hate IoT

This is convenient but hackers' dreamland

    Connected objects are our future.

THIS MAKES ME HATE IT MORE!! THINGS LIKE COMMUNICATION, COST-EFFECTIVE, AND PRIVACY/SECURITY(and I guess Information Access), BUT AUTOMATION AND LESSER JOBS IS A BAD THING. THAT WILL PUT PEOPLE OUT OF JOBS, CAUSING THEM TO HAVE TO FIND A NEW ONE, HOPING TO BE HIRED, THAT WILL DAMAGE THE ECONOMY (OR POSSIBLE DESTROY IT)!! PEOPLE THAT ARE BELOW THE POVERTY LINE THAT MIGHT HAVE JOBS MIGHT LOSE THEM AND MAY NEVER FIND A JOB AGAIN, THIS IS AND IMPROVEMENT FOR THE RICH, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE POOR PEOPLE WHO BARELY HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO JUST LIVE?!?! IT'S MAKING IT TO WHERE PEOPLE HAVE TO GO TO COLLEGE TO EVEN THINK ABOUT GETTING A JOB, LET ALONE, ACTUALLY GET ONE. THIS ONLY HELPS PEOPLE THAT ARE RICH OR BIG, CORPORATE BUSINESS OWNERS!!!! THIS IS ONE OF THOSE HUMANIST EVOLUTION THINGS I HATE SO BADLY!!!! IM COMPLETELY AGAINST THIS, BECAUSE IT DOESN'T DO ANYTHING FOR PEOPLE BELOW THE POVERTY LINE AND THE ECONOMY!!!!
