Searches For 'Cancel Netflix Account' Reach 733%

Online searches for ‘cancel Netflix account’ exploded 733% worldwide after the streaming giant announced their plan to crack down on password sharing.

'Cancel Netflix Account’ has skyrocketed since the announcement, according to Google search data, an unprecedented spike in people wanting to delete their Netflix accounts.

The rise in interest in cancelling Netflix accounts across the globe comes after the streaming giant announced their plans to restrict account and password sharing. Going forward, users will have to log into the local home WiFi network on which the account was set up at least once a month to avoid being blocked, a change that could affect up to 100 million user accounts.

Netflix has mistakenly made public a set of guidelines aimed at cracking down on password sharing to its global users.

The guidelines were being trialled in Chile, Peru and Costa Rica, but were accidentally posted on its help center pages in other countries, including the US last month. The guidelines have since been taken down.

The streaming service has been experimenting with “paid sharing” in these countries since last year, which involves an account holder paying for an extra person outside their home to access the service. In Costa Rica, this fee amounts to $2.99 (£2.44) per month.

According to Netflix, account sharing undermines their ability to invest in and improve their service.

The company has more than 230 million subscribers worldwide, with over 100 million households sharing accounts.

In response, Netflix plans to roll out paid sharing in other countries in the first three months of 2023. Members in these countries will have the option to pay extra if they want to share Netflix with people outside their household. The company recognises that these restrictions may be challenging for members who share their account more broadly.

Netflix recognises that restrictions on account sharing will be a change for many of its users and may not be received positively by all. Nevertheless, the company believes that it is necessary to protect its long-term ability to invest in and improve its service.

While Netflix is available in most countries, there are still some untapped markets where it could expand.

Netflix has already made strides in creating localized content for different markets, but it could continue to do so to appeal to even more viewers. This could include partnering with local content creators or acquiring more local content.

A seamless and enjoyable user experience can go a long way in retaining and attracting users. Netflix could invest in improving features like search functionality, recommendations, and personalization to make the platform even more user-friendly.

Netflix has already ventured into interactive content with shows like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and Carmen Sandiego, but there is potential for even more innovation in this area. It could also explore new formats like podcasts or live events.

By implementing new strategies, Netflix can continue to expand its user base and maintain its position as a leading streaming service in the increasingly competitive entertainment industry.
