The Tony Robbins of Uber Drivers

Two years ago, I had a 3 day work trip from North Carolina to Oregon that included a round trip flight across country, 8 hours in a car between Portland and Bend, and firsthand inspiration from people like Charity Water CEO, Scott Harrison. But the most impactful thing happened after a sleepless redeye flight back to North Carolina. All I wanted from the Uber driver was a comfortable (and silent) 20-minute ride home. What I Got Was Way Better.

Does your Business have a Blackpool Tower?

Imagine that I showed photos of the seafronts at Brighton, Bognor Regis and Bournemouth and asked you which was which. It would not be easy for most people to tell them apart. Now suppose I added a photo of Blackpool. Nearly everyone would recognise it. Why? Because it has an enormous iron tower which is well-known around the world. The tower is not modern, not used by most visitors to the town and not particularly attractive but it is easily recognisable. Blackpool has something unique and memorable and that is part of the reason why it gets 12 million visitors a year – more than any other seaside resort in the UK.

Steps to Follow to Become a Great Leader

When I was in college I wanted to be a professional golfer. I had the college golf experience and the prior success to support making the leap after school. I gave it a shot and I quickly realized what I didn’t have. A good understanding of what it really took to not just be a good professional golfer, but a great one. My story isn’t unique, there are millions of people that had dreams of having a famous profession; astronaut, professional athlete, entrepreneur, author, youtuber, or politician. What's interesting is rarely do people just dream of being a great leader, but once they settle into a different career that wasn't their dream job, this dream of being a leader springs to life. The thought of moving into a management role, having employees report to them, increasing their corporate responsibility, going on corporate trips and receiving a pay increase are attractive. We call it the PEG Factor.

Why Strong Leaders are a Massive Blessing

As I stood up to shake his hand, it hit me like ton of bricks.  This man had come into my life for a purpose. His overwhelming love and support for my development as a professional was on display in every interaction we ever had both in good times and in bad. I felt my lip begin to quiver, the water build up in my eyes and as I took a deep breath I extended my hand and said, “Thank you from the bottom of my heart, you will never know how big of an impact you have had on my life.”  As I turned to walk out the door he said, “John, thank you, but all I have ever tried to do is be what I didn't get from my leaders as a young professional.” As I walked out of that office for the last time, what he didn’t know or hadn’t even thought of, is how much of a blessing he was on my life.
