The impact of climate change has been well-documented over the last couple of years. Experts and policy makers should leverage innovative technologies such as big data to fight this phenomenon in order to protect our planet and live a sustainable life.

Global warming has become an increasingly worrying problem. Melting glaciers are causing the sea level to rise. Some countries are prone to earthquakes and coastal areas are susceptible to tsunamis. This situation should not be overlooked by world leaders even if they do not believe in climate change. According to a recent study conducted by Weather Analytics, adverse weather changes affect more than 33% of worldwide GDP, impacting numerous industries.

To handle such issues, there is a need for new technologies like big data and predictive analytics, that can forecast any change in weather conditions. Such technologies will help experts implement preventive measures based on accurate predictions. Here’s how experts can leverage big data to fight climate change and reduce its adverse effects:

"More than 1 million species have already faced extinction due to global warming.” And now, the human life is in danger. With big data and predictive analysis, experts can strategize to cut down carbon emissions keeping in mind the current climatic conditions. Big data can set realistic goals.
Melting glaciers causing a rise in the sea level, is another concern that the world is facing. With real-time analytics and big data, necessary proactive measures can be undertaken and our glaciers can be saved.

Large swarms of data from multiple sources reveal information on issues like an increase in global temperature, emission rate of carbon, and areas prone to natural calamities. Such data can be assimilated and analyzed. The analysis will help reveal the hidden patterns in data, find the correlation between data sets, and offer actionable insights. Examples of real-time analysis platforms that use big data are:

Google Earth Engine is a platform that “stores satellite imagery, organizes it, and makes it available for the first time for global-scale data mining.”

Global Forest Power gathers data about forest areas across the world, providing information on the occurrence of forest fires, and deforestation, if any.

Climate change is scary. Most natural disasters are unpredictable but it is possible now to predict their occurrence thanks to big data analytics. This will help us take necessary steps well in time to avoid a tragedy.

Predictive analytics and big data can together help fight climate change and reduce its impact on our daily life.

I think that the debate is about whether the future is for everyone, or whether the wealthy should kill off enough of the population to make balancing the environment a little easier.

Naveen, big data is a great asset in the fight against climate change. We definitely are seeing an increase in activity with companies responding to the impact big data has made on their business. For companies of any size, getting meaningful insights from data analytics is an important priority. HPCC Systems (hpccsystems.com) is one of the open source big data platforms with built-in analytics libraries for Machine Learning to help extract useful insights from data and represents more than a decade of internal research and development in the big data analytics field.
