9 Amazing Water Activities That Also Keep Environment Safe

Water sports are a lot of fun. However, some of them damage the environment.

The use of speedboats and jet skis, for example, can release harmful chemicals into the ocean. These chemicals then kill marine life.

If you are interested in water sports, then you need to select an ethical sport. Unless you are an expert in water sports, you will probably have no idea what constitutes an ethical water sport. Don’t worry though, this post has you covered.

Here are nine amazing water sports that are safe for the environment.

Kayaking

Kayaking is a lot of fun. According to the experts over at Water Sports Whiz, it is one of the most popular water sports around. The thing that makes kayaking so great is that you can do it absolutely anywhere. As long as you have access to a body of water, a river network, or in the ocean, you can go. There are different types of kayaks, too. The most affordable type of kayak is the inflatable kayak. You can pick up an inflatable kayak for next to nothing online. Inflatable kayaks are also very easy to transport.

Rowing

Rowing is another extremely fun water sport. It’s ethical because the environment isn’t harmed when you go rowing. The only downside to it is that you have to have access to some kind of cabin, otherwise you’ll have nowhere to store your boat. Some people remedy this by joining a rowing club. If you join a rowing club, then you will be able to row using the club’s private boats. Rowing can be a great strength exercise, because of the muscles in your arm and chest that are worked out when you push the oars back and forth.

Canoeing

Canoeing is a lot like rowing, except it’s much less intense and doesn’t rely as much on strength. Many people go canoeing purely to relax. Rowing is a sport that’s taken up more for exercise than anything else. Like rowing, canoeing requires you to have somewhere to store your canoe. A big problem many people encounter with canoeing is the fact that canoes are huge. It’s usually quite difficult to find ‘canoeing clubs’ too. You will need to live in close proximity to a lake or river so that you can tow your canoe there (or attach it to your roof).

Fishing

Fishing is a controversial sport. A lot of people say it’s unethical. However, fishing can be ethical, as long as you do not hurt the fish and you return them to the water when you’re done with them. Fishing only becomes a problem when people take their catches home, kill, and eat them. When you do this, you risk overfishing. If you practice safe fishing and then return fish to the water after cleaning them up, you don’t have to worry about behaving unethically. Make sure to invest in high-quality equipment and barbless hooks, so the fish you catch do not get hurt.

Swimming

Swimming is a very fun activity. It’s not something you even need access to a body of water to enjoy, since you can just go swimming in a public pool. If you are interested in going swimming, then it is essential that you take the time to learn to become a confident swimmer. You can do this in a public pool, under the supervision of a lifeguard. Never go swimming alone in a lake or river until you know exactly how you are supposed to swim and how to control yourself when you are in the water.

Surfboarding

You will need to have a beach near you if you want to go surfing. It’s not a sport you can perform on a river or in a lake. It’s a pretty tricky sport to learn, too. Surfing doesn’t come naturally to most people. However, there are usually surfing clubs and classes available at the most popular surfing beaches. Therefore, you need to find a beach popular with surfers in your area, so you can take classes there. Surfing is a great sport for physical fitness and it’s also exhilarating. Give it a go if you want to try something new.

Windsurfing

Windsurfing is another very enjoyable sport. Unlike surfboarding, you can go windsurfing on lakes. In fact, most people who go windsurfing do go on lakes. There are usually windsurfing clubs at most large, popular sporting lakes. You do not need to buy your own equipment if there’s a club near you. You will just need to register with them, then you will be able to use their equipment. Usually, registration with a water sports club won’t cost you much. You usually just have to pay a monthly membership fee, which is not ever a lot.

Scuba diving

Scuba diving can be ethical. However, it is important to note that in order to get out to an area of the ocean that’s good for scuba diving, you will have to go on a boat. Because of this, chemicals will be released into the ocean. However, you can make scuba diving ethical by cleaning up when you are in the ocean. If you see plastic or any kind of human waste, pick them up and take them with you. Doing this will help to protect the ocean from pollution. The damage done by the boat you arrive on will be nothing compared to the damage done if plastic waste is left to sit on the ocean floor.

Paddleboarding

Finally, we arrived at paddleboarding. Paddleboarding is a water sport that can be done virtually anywhere. You do not need access to the ocean or even a lake to do it, you can do it on a creek or in a river network. You don’t need a lot of equipment for paddleboarding, either. However, it is important that you know how to swim because you’re guaranteed to capsize at least once. If you cannot swim, take some classes before attempting any of the sports mentioned here.

Water sports can be good for the environment. They can also be good for your physical fitness. If you’re interested in taking up water sports, then give the suggestions made here some consideration. All of the sports listed in this post are ethical, affordable, and fun.
