Last week I realized a dream. I presented to around 400 Executive Assistants at Microsoft HQ in Seattle. ME! A 50-year-old, gay, Black, ex-farmboy who grew up in freshly segregated East Texas not knowing what life had in store for me.
Success in absolutely anything you do is determined by your mindset. Period. If you believe you can accomplish something, wrap your head around what it will look like to achieve it, imagine what it will feel like when you achieve it, and keep that objective with all of the research, feelings, and focus in tow, you will achieve it...wildly. Unfortunately, we live in an age where people simply don't want to do the work, devote the time, or expend the energy it takes to develop the mindset needed to achieve. Instead, we'd rather post the post and appear like we've already conquered the goal when, in reality, we question our ability to actually achieve it.
My first two weeks in my new role as Executive Vice President have been incredibly eye-opening. It's weird to be inhabiting an office that I used to walk clients to, water plants, and straighten chairs in. I have to admit that being a "badass EA" is a mere prerequisite for taking on as huge a responsibility as an EVP. Sure, 99.98% of the skills I attained after 27 years managing the administrative component of the C-suite and execs as a top performing Executive Assistant are seamlessly transferable and likely put me just that bit ahead of my new peer group, with soft skills and hard skills they simply don't have. But there's a whole different level of urgency and pressure to get it right in this role that I had not anticipated, with each decision and move I make having a direct effect on the business.
