Barack Obama made a surprise visit to Downing Street during his trip to London, where he engaged in discussions with Rishi Sunak.

Obama's meeting with Sunak touched upon various topics, including artificial intelligence (AI), a subject of particular interest to the British Prime Minister.

Obama, who served as President from 2009 to 2017, was in London as part of his work with the Obama Foundation, which oversees initiatives such as a scholarship program. According to the prime minister's spokesperson, Obama's team initiated the visit, and Prime Minister Sunak welcomed the opportunity to discuss the work of the Obama Foundation.

The meeting, which lasted approximately an hour, primarily consisted of one-on-one discussions held in the prime minister's study. While Obama briefly acknowledged the media at the door of No 10, the meeting itself remained private, with no official photographs released.

Following his departure from Downing Street, Obama, accompanied by US Ambassador to the UK Jane D Hartley, briefly commented on Russian democracy when questioned by the media, teasingly saying, "I'm tempted!" Later, Obama also met with Labour leader Keir Starmer during his visit.

This isn't the first time Obama has visited Downing Street; he previously did so in April 2016 when David Cameron was Prime Minister. However, during Obama's tenure, he had expressed concerns about Cameron's handling of certain international issues, particularly regarding Libya. In 2016, Obama criticized Cameron for being preoccupied with domestic matters as Libya faced turmoil. Additionally, he urged Cameron to fulfill NATO's defense spending targets to preserve the "special relationship" between the US and the UK.

Cameron, in turn, was critical of Obama in his autobiography, accusing the former President of indecisiveness regarding Libya and expressing frustration over his involvement in the situation.

Despite any past disagreements, Obama's recent visit to Downing Street underscores the ongoing engagement between US and UK political figures, with discussions extending to areas such as AI, a domain of growing importance in both countries. As Obama continues his work with the Obama Foundation, such informal meetings provide opportunities for dialogue and collaboration on shared interests and challenges.
