Rishi Sunak is officially the UK’s prime minister after accepting an invitation by King Charles III to form a government.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has congratulated Rishi Sunak on becoming prime minister.

China says it hopes it can “advance relations” with the UK after Rishi Sunak’s appointment as prime minister.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has also congratulated Rishi Sunak.

Sunak, the first British Asian to assume the role and a multimillionaire former banker, paid passing tribute to those predecessors in his first speech. 

Just like Liz Truss, Sunak was not elected by the U.K.’s 67 million people but rather appointed by a few hundred Conservative lawmakers.

Sunak is Britain’s third prime minister in seven weeks.

The former Treasury chief faces an economy in turmoil and a deeply divided Conservative Party.

In the U.K., the party with the most lawmakers in the House of Commons can appoint a new leader without holding a nationwide election. 

During his time as heir, King Charles made a point of fostering close relationships with the Asian community, setting up the British Asian Trust with a group of business leaders in 2007.

Jeremy Hunt will remain Chancellor. He has twice stood unsuccessfully for the party leadership - in 2019 and last summer.

One of Boris Johnson's most loyal supporters, Jacob Rees-Mogg, has resigned as business secretary while Brandon Lewis has stepped down as justice secretary.

Alok Sharma has been removed from cabinet but remains Cop26 president, No 10 has briefed. He'll negotiate on behalf of the UK at Cop27 in Egypt but will no longer be a minister or attend cabinet.

Dominic Raab has been appointed as Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary.

Raab was Brexit secretary in July 2018 - quitting only months later in opposition to Theresa May’s Brexit deal.
