Trends in Healthcare Delivery Entrepreneurship Education

Medical entrepreneurship is the pursuit of opportunity under VUCA conditions with the goal of creating multiple stakeholder defined value through the deployment of medical technology and care delivery innovation using a VAST business model.

There have been several favorable trends, particularly in the technology transfer of drugs, devices, diagnostics and digital health products and services. However, specific care delivery innovation and entrepreneurship course, certificates and degrees, other than MBA programs, are less common.

Recent trends include:

  1. Variable structure and process dependant on local resources and existing programs.

  2. A range of course offerings.

  3. More programs that are shorter, less expensive and more relevant and applicable to student and employer needs.

  4. Emphasis on both entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship.

  5. A team project structure with definable applicable and deployable results.

  6. Platforms, not just courses, that offer resources, networks, mentors, experience, peer to peer support and career development guidance.

  7. Learning objectives that reinforce entrepreneurial competencies.

  8. Interdisciplinary and multifunctional coherence and collaboration.

  9. An emphasis on creating a culture of innovation and the steps necessary for successful new process and business model deployment.

  10. Changing the lens from administration to leadership to leaderpreneurship.

Care delivery innovation and entrepreneurship education and training will be a critical part of changing sickcare to healthcare. Recent trends indicate we are gradually heading in that direction.
