Going Remote: The Future of Sports Content Production

There is no debate about the fact that almost everything on the globe is taking a turn to the digital space.

Today, you can comfortably purchase your favorite apparel, equipment, tools, or dishes without having to move an inch, let alone leave your home’s comfort. Yes, we have relied on digital broadcasts before to watch live events and streams, but this seems to have gone a notch higher over the past year or so.

Couple Watching a Game

Now, sporting events bring people all around the world together. Strangers become friends, do settle their differences, and enemies get a chance to come together for a common GOAL! Sports also have a huge benefit to the mental health and overall wellness of populations, from the athletes to the fans. This is not to forget how much economic impact they can have. Over the past few years, the sports industry has joined the bandwagon, and a lot of sports content production happens remotely! Is it going remote? Well, there is only one way to find out. Read on as we cover some of the reasons for this in the piece below.

Popularized By the Pandemic?

Owing to all the many benefits we realize from sports, it has naturally become part of our lives over the years. If you are a hard rock fan of Manchester United, the Yankees, or the Lakers, missing the live action of a major game could easily stress you up. Well, the COVID-19 pandemic came with travel bans, curfews, social distancing measures, and movement restrictions.

This meant that you couldn’t watch the game from the pitch, and you couldn’t even watch it from your favorite bar or lounge with friends. Traditional broadcasting also became a huge challenge. For these and more reasons, remote production became the most ideal way to deliver content to sports consumers live and conveniently. Thanks to these advanced innovations, consumers can now stream live sports content from home on their smart TVs, phones, tablets, and other devices, even from places with the toughest lockdown restrictions.

We can never say that the COVID-19 pandemic was beneficial, but we can consider it as an eye-opener on many fronts. From the look of things, it appears that this technology is here to stay even after we manage to defeat the coronavirus.

It Is Better in All Aspects

If you have been a football fan for a while now, you must have noticed the enhancement of the quality of content broadcasted by sport content producers. Sometimes you book yourself a seat in the stadium and regardless of the authenticity of the game and all, you still find it better to have a piece of the action from the screen. Statistically, most people don't have a choice on how to keep up with their favorite matches and games other than digitally. This is exactly why sports content will end up being done remotely. The larger number of people will then be given the quality of content needed.

It’s the New Norm

Needless to reiterate, if there is something that the COVID-19 pandemic taught us, there is much we can do from the comfort of our houses. Many companies took their operations digital, and this is slowly becoming the new normal.

Again, the need to observe social distancing as a measure to curb the spread of the virus, made stadiums an empty spectacle, even when matches that would have otherwise attracted a multitude of people are ongoing. While the people who have always enjoyed being part of the real action feel misplaced, to the rest it's a match like any other. Even as the restrictions are being lifted, many live sports broadcasters find the empty stadium better because it makes production easier. With this in mind, don't you think this might be the future of sports content production?

It’s Cheaper

We have talked about the benefits of having sports content being remotely produced. What we haven't mentioned is the fact that the cost is relatively low. The main contributor to this is that matches don't have to be in different locations. The production equipment can be set-up in one location and production is done from the same place, cutting the cost of having to move and setting them up in different places. Generally, the production industry will have saved a lot of capital, some of which can be used to enhance the quality of the produced content.

Football Match

While sportsmen and athletes need the action for the money and self-satisfaction, the fans need it even more. They need it for entertainment, stress-relief, motivation, and so much more. We can only wait and see what the future holds as far as remote and cloud solutions for sports content production are concerned.

We work in this space. Our cloud based graphics platform more than doubled in sign ups during Covid as clients (both old and new) migrated to cloud and remote based production.

There are multiple other factors to consider in addition to what you have mentioned. We recently participated in two full 5G productions with clients. 5G will significantly impact the potential for remote live production in a positive way.

In addition one of the other huge benefits is sustainability. Platforms like ours are not hardware dependent so operators can work on any computer from anywhere. Traditional systems involved shipping large amounts of hardware and people all over the world to produce events. Remote and cloud productions eliminate or at least massively reduce that need which also hugely reduces the environmental impact of live production.
