How to be a Good Manager When You Just Don’t Feel Like Being One

There are both good days and bad days at work. Let’s talk about the bad days today. I’m pretty sure you guys know what I’m talking about; we have all been there at least one point or the other.

You just can’t focus. The day feels long and slow. You feel ‘off’ either for a specific reason or no reason at all. Whatever be it, it’s definitely not a good place to be at especially when you are in a professional space.

The good news is that you can bounce back when you’re feeling off whether you are a junior accountant or a boss.

Here are some do’s and don’ts to overcome the work doldrums and get back to work with a zing:

Do: Understand What’s Happening

Get in your head and see what exactly is bothering you. Is it the work overwhelm or the onslaught of emotions that are making you sad, angry, frustrated at work? You are a mature and sensible adult who should know how to not be a slave of your emotions and deliver what’s expected out of you at work.

What Can You Do About it?

  • Take a deep look inside
  • Don’t fight emotions; embrace them
  • Take it easy. Don’t be too hard on yourself
  • Talk to someone preferably your non-work friends
  • Shift your focus to work at hand

Don’t: Overreact

Bad days can get anyone at any time and there’s hardly anything you can do about it. What is there in your control is to not overreact and maintain a calm composure or at least try doing so. For some reason, if you find yourself struggling, go for a quick walk outside or focus on your breathing just sitting in the bathroom for a few minutes.

What Can You Do About it?

  • Don’t let emotions bottle up
  • Talk about it but don’t react haphazardly
  • Revisit your team’s vision or purpose
  • Think of how your actions might affect your colleagues

Do: Tune in to Your Favourite Playlist

If you’re allowed to use headphones at work, you should know that music can dramatically improve your mood in a few minutes. Put on your favorite tunes on Spotify to bounce back from a bad day at work. Be mindful of the choice of music as it could do as bad as good it could do.

What Can You Do About it?

  • Try listening to smooth or light music
  • You can also try humorous podcasts and stand-up comedy shows
  • Watch different dog/cat/baby videos on YouTube

Don’t: Distract Yourself Doing Mindless Things

Hopping randomly from one task to another isn’t going to do any good to you. Why? Because you’re already having a bad day and doing unimportant tasks won’t provide any sense of accomplishment or contribute to your productivity. Make a to-do list of important work items on your favorite productivity tool and start working on them. Break them into small steps and start slow and steady.

What Can You Do About it?

  • Take a break from the routine tasks
  • Do little but productive things
  • Remove the unimportant things from your personal to-do list
