After graduation, Springer worked for a law firm in Cincinnati before entering politics. He was elected to the Cincinnati City Council in 1971 and became the city's mayor in 1977, serving one term.

The show's notoriety reached its peak in 2000 when a German man was accused of killing his ex-wife after they appeared together on Springer's show with the man's new wife. Ralf Panitz was convicted of second-degree murder for beating Nancy Panitz to death. That year, Springer appeared on "Larry King Live," in his first major interview since the murder.

Springer defended his show, stating that it was an hour of escapism with no redeeming social value. He also emphasized that there was never anything on his show that had not been on the front pages of newspapers in America. Springer's show was known for its controversial content and received criticism for contributing to the decline of culture.

Springer's show aired over 4,000 episodes and ended in 2018. He also hosted a podcast and appeared as a judge in the television show "Judge Jerry," which aired in 2019.
