Joe Biden Warns That Democracy is Under Attack

The United States is heading towards an era in which political trust is collapsing.

In a speech about threats to democracy, President Joe Biden condemns candidates who refuse to accept election results, warning it is "a path to chaos in America"

The United States should act immediately to deal with misinformation that poses an existential threat to democracy and way of life in general. 

“We can’t take democracy for granted any longer,” the president said from Union Station in Washington.

Speaking in the shadow of the US Capitol, the Democratic president said of the voting conspiracies: "It’s unprecedented. It’s unlawful. And it is un-American."

The US Federal Reserve has announced a 0.75% raise in interest rates as it attempts to tackle inflation.

Cost of living is a hot topic on the campaign trail. Inflation reached 8.2% in the US in September, higher than analysts expected.

Biden’s speech placed blame for the dire national situation squarely at the feet of his predecessor, Donald Trump, accusing the former president of cultivating a lie that has metastasized into a web of conspiracies that has already resulted in targeted violence.

Concerns regarding the state of democracy and the perceived threat of autocracies and other regimes, are not new.

The US president made sure to note that most Americans, and even most Republicans, would not resort to violence.

America has failed to get to grips with the urgency of the challenges of the digital age.

It's important to ensure online platforms are transparent in how their algorithms work so they are not operating in ways that discriminate against minorities.

Political advertising must be brought into line with other advertising in the requirement for truth and accuracy. 

The expansion of authoritarian rule, combined with the fading and inconsistent presence of major democracies on the international stage, has had tangible effects on human life and security.
