Men's Mental Health: You are Stronger Than Your Own Thoughts

Dr. Long Quach 17/08/2020 9

People often report they feel like they are losing control.

They can’t breath or brace themselves.

Their thoughts are spinning and some even see light spots or feeling in a daze.

Anxiety can make you feel like you’re not in control.

But the thing is, you can be!

One of my favorite things to do is to sing one of my favorite songs in my head and then slowing that song down as if I’m going in slow motion!

You are in control!

Many men I know in my life have always had one fear that they'd never tell anyone.

They are afraid of looking weak.

They often mistake misplaced pride for strength.

They often suffer and oftentimes in silence.

I know I have done that at some point in my life.

Our world has conditioned men to be afraid of feelings, afraid of tears, and afraid to be vulnerable.

Men die by completed suicide at very high rates.

Let’s not keep silent so the boys in our lives can grow up and be strong and healthy!

Let’s not keep silent so the men in our lives can feel encouraged and empowered to seek help!

The biggest problem I think, is that men are raised not to show their emotions, because we expect to be looked down upon. While women are expected to cry and show their feelings, and they get sympathy for it, that's why the male suicide rate is 4 times higher than females.

Young boys are stigmatized to be aggressive at schools, which leads to a higher number in males dropping out of schools.

Sometimes I really feel like going. it comes across my mind quite a lot and it’s like I want to be here but I don’t want to. Who knows what the future brings.
