Kurt Zouma has avoided jail, however he has to carry out 180 hours of community service.

The West Ham United defender pleaded guilty to kicking and slapping his cat.

Former Chelsea defender Zouma issued an apology.

The 27-year-old has been banned from keeping cats for five years.

West Ham has handed a maximum fine understood to be £250,000, after widespread condemnation over viral footage of Kurt Zouma dropping, kicking and slapping one of his cats.

The fine was donated to animal rights charities. Vitality, the club’s official wellness partner, suspended its sponsorship with immediate effect. Zouma has also lost his Adidas footwear sponsorship.

Kurt Zouma had admitted two offences under the Animal Welfare Act at a hearing at Thames Magistrates' Court in May.

Zouma's brother Yoan, who plays for Dagenham and Redbridge, was ordered to carry out 140 hours of community service at the 15-minute hearing.

The case was brought following an RSPCA investigation.

Yoan, 24, filmed the incident at his older brother's home and posted it on Snapchat with 'laughing' emojis on 6 February.

Although cats are more independent than many other pets, owning one is still a major commitment.

It's important to take care of pets including cats. Owning a cat can bring unconditional love and companionship to your life. Having a feline friend can also help to relieve stress and improve your heart health.

Cats make great pets whether you live in a big house or tiny apartment, and they provide all the fun and play of larger animal companions.
