A new study has revealed the most overrated Netflix Original films and TV shows.

The study looked at Metacritic reviews for Netflix Originals, and ranked each one by the difference between their verified critic and user review scores, to find which are the most overrated.

The most overrated Netflix Original was found to be Enola Holmes, with a difference of 40 points between critic and user reviews.

The 2020 film stars Milly Bobby Brown as the younger sister to the famous fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes, as she sets out to find her missing mother. With a critic review score of 68 out of 100, users only gave the film 28 out of 100.

Second on the list is The Queen’s Gambit with a score difference of 36 points. Set during the Cold War, this 2020 miniseries follows chess prodigy Beth Harmon’s struggle with addiction throughout her quest to become the greatest chess player in the world.

Critics found the series to be generally favorable, scoring the show 79 out of 100, whilst users only rated the show 43 out of 100.

Third place goes to The Witcher: Blood Origin, with a score difference of 33 points. The fantasy TV show, which is loosely adapted from the book series, serves as a prequel to The Witcher TV series. Critics found the show to be underwhelming, scoring it just 45 out of 100. Users were even less impressed by the show, scoring it just 12 out of 100.

In fourth place is a three-way tie between Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and Lady Dynamite. All three entries saw a score difference of 20 points.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom received a critic review score of 87 out of 100, compared to a user score of 67 out of 100. Lady Dynamite received a critic score of 85 compared to a user score of 65, while Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery received a critic score of 81 compared to a user score of only 61.

Big Mouth is in fifth place with a score difference of 18 points. The 2017 animated comedy show was extremely well-received by critics, scoring 83 out of 100. However, users only rated the show 65 out of 100.

The sixth spot on the list goes to Marriage Story, with a score difference of 13 points. The 2019 drama starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson received outstanding critic reviews, scoring 94 out of 100, which was the highest critic score of any entry in the top ten. It received a strong, but slightly lower, score of 81 out of 100 from users, however.

Seventh place is another tie between Midnight Sky and Death Note. Both saw a score difference of 12 points.

The eighth spot on the list goes to The Old Guard, with a score difference of 11 points, while ninth place goes to Fear Street Part One: 1994, with a score difference of 10 points.

Rounding out the list in tenth place is Sweet Tooth, with a score difference of 9 points.

Polarthe 2019 action thriller starring Mads Mikkelsen, ranked as the most underrated Netflix original, with users generally disagreeing with its harsh critic review score. Critics overwhelmingly rated the film poorly, scoring it just 19 out of 100, whereas it received a much more positive reception from Metacritic users, with a score of 64 out of 100.

A spokesperson commented on the findings, saying:

“The study highlights a noticeable gap in perspectives between critics and the public, prompting a deeper exploration into what may shape these divergent opinions.

“One contributing factor could be the pervasive hype and social media buzz surrounding an upcoming movie or TV show.

“Despite their best efforts to remain fair and impartial, critics can still be inadvertently swept up in the prevailing excitement of a new release and offer a slightly more generous review than might be merited.

“Users, many of whom view the release at a later date, are not necessarily subjected to the same external pressures, and may find they can offer a more objective review of each title.”
