After running your business for a long time, you may start to feel your enthusiasm and confidence slipping away.
You may start to see your business as a chore and you may struggle to get the same results as you once did. This is a clear sign that you have lost your business mojo.
What should you do when this happens? Should you try to get your mojo back? Or should you walk away from your business? This post offers a few tips.
A lack of fresh inspiration can cause many of us to get stuck in a rut. By actively seeking out inspiration, you may be able to rebuild your enthusiasm and confidence.
There are a few different ways to seek out inspiration. These include:
Investing in business coaching or attending business workshops/seminars
Reading business blogs and books
Taking courses to learn new skills that could help you to improve your business
Talking to other local business owners about how they run their business
Brainstorming ideas with employees
Doing some competitor research to get an idea what other businesses are doing
Conducting customer surveys to see what customers want
Quite often, fresh insight is what we need to help us find direction. This can only come from other people - particularly new people who you’ve never talked to before about your business.
Taking a break from your business could be essential if you’re getting bored with duties or if you’re starting to feel exhausted from work stress. A break will not only allow you to relax and mentally recover, but it could also help you gain perspective.
When you’re constantly surrounded by your work, you're unable to visualise your life without it. Taking a vacation could help you to imagine life without your business. Would you feel happier without it? Or would you feel empty leaving it all behind? A break can help you to realise how much your business means to you - it could motivate you to give it up, or it could motivate you to throw more energy into it.
There could be a lot of business tasks that you dread. However, there could be tasks that you still enjoy. By finding a way of focusing more attention on the tasks you enjoy, you could find your mojo again.
For instance, if you own a cleaning company and find office cleaning monotonous but look forward to one-off deep cleans and hoarding clearouts, consider switching your company’s USP to these types of jobs. If you hate accounting and the admin side, consider outsourcing a secretary to take care of these jobs for you.
Adopting a positive mindset could help you to restore your business mojo. If you’ve started to doubt yourself and question everything you do, consider making a conscious effort to think more positively. Focus on what you’ve achieved rather than what you’ve not achieved, and try to focus on solutions rather than problems. You can also begin each day with a personal pep talk. You may start to see your business in a different light by doing this.
If you’ve only recently started to lose your business mojo, it could be worth giving your business another shot. If you’ve been stressed or depressed with your business for a long time now and you’ve tried to make changes, it may be a clear sign that it’s time to walk away to preserve your mental health. Walking away could be particularly worthwhile if your life goals have changed and you’ve found a new calling.
When walking away from a business, you have several options. You can sell the business, hand it down to someone else or simply provide a closure notice period to all your customers. Selling your business or handing down your business is likely to be the most rewarding option, however it may not be suitable if your business is struggling.
