Casino Royale (2006) was found to be the highest rated Bond film.

With Aaron Taylor-Johnson pegged as the next 007, new research has identified the highest-rated former James Bond actors, with Daniel Craig coming out top.

The experts calculated the average user rating across IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes for all 25 movies in the James Bond franchise so far. They then looked at which James Bond actor has achieved the highest average movie rating.

Daniel Craig was found to be the fan-favourite Bond actor, with an average movie rating of 7.56 out of 10. With five movies under his belt, Craig also starred in the highest rated title, Casino Royale, which scored an average of 8.2 out of 10. Not only does he star in the highest rated bond movie, but his third outing as the secret agent in Skyfall, generated the franchise’s highest box office figure, at $1.109 billion.

The late Edinburgh-born actor, Sean Connery, ranks as the second highest rated 007, with an average movie rating of 7.33. Connery portrayed the first iteration of Ian Fleming’s character all the way back in 1962, when he starred in Terence Young’s, Dr. No. His highest rated Bond movie, however, came two years later when he returned to play the secret agent in Goldfinger, which averages 8.05 out of 10.

Despite portraying Bond only twice, Timothy Dalton placed third with an average movie rating of 6.90. He is followed by George Lazenby (6.85) and Roger Moore (6.66).

Pierce Brosnan, who played the role of Bond four times between 1995 and 2002, had the lowest rated movies on average, at 6.65 out of 10.

The study also looked at the highest-rated Bond film of all-time, with Casino Royale placing first with an average rating of 8.50 out of 10.

Both No Time to Die and Goldfinger were ranked second with an average rating of 8.05, while Skyfall placed third with an average rating of 8.00.

Speaking on the findings, Steven Ellis said, “The anticipation surrounding the selection of the next James Bond is electrifying, as it captures the essence of cinematic tradition and the evolution of cultural icons.

“Ranking 007 actors allows us to reflect on the cultural significance of each portrayal, examining how each actor has left their mark on the franchise and contributed to its ongoing legacy.

“As each new actor steps into the iconic role, it offers a thrilling opportunity to witness fresh interpretations, perspectives, and nuances breathed into the character.”
