What Should Your Career Path Look Like?

When it comes to your career, you’re always going to take a certain amount of pride in it.

You will want to do well and find some success. But sometimes you can overthink it. You can feel like you have to do a certain amount of work by a certain age or you worry if you’re even on the right track. You may even find that imposter syndrome kicks in and that can feel quite stressful. However, it’s something that we all experience. We worry that we’re not skilled enough or good enough, when really we are. Instead of giving yourself a hard time, comparing yourself to others, and putting a lot of pressure on yourself, it’s time to be real and focus on the career path that works best for you.

Because that’s the thing. You really don’t have to have a set career path that looks a set way. There is no ‘should’ about it. It’s a very personal thing and it’s okay for you to choose a career path that works best for you. It’s okay to take a look at others for advice, see what they’re doing and see if you can get inspiration, but you needn’t compare or feel like you’re inadequate.

Now is the time to take a look at your career and business path and see what will work best for you. To help you, we’re going to walk through a range of options that you can add to your career plan to help you to get to where you want to be. Let’s take a look.

Set Goals

First of all, you need to have some goals. If you’re getting up and going to work every single day without a clear idea of what it is that you want to do, you may start to feel a little lost. When really, you need to make sure that you know what you’re working towards.

It’s a good idea to have goals for your life and your career too. Think about the end goal and where you want to be. Then, start to break down what it’s going to take for you to get there. This can be one of those things that you do that helps you to actually progress because you’re giving yourself a framework to follow and some guidance.

Consider Your Finances

The next thing that you need to be able to do is take a look at your finances. Because as much as you may love what you do and want to do a set career because it’s fun and you’re passionate about it, you do work for money. So, you need to make sure that you’re earning what you need to be.

It’s a good idea to take a look at your financial situation and see where you are now. Look at what you’re earning and make sure that it covers all of your bills and outgoings. If you know that you want a pay rise or promotion, it’s time to start working for that. Set earnings goals for yourself and work out what you’re going to be able to earn and when. This can help you to move along in your career path at the rate that works for you.

Feel The Love

It’s also important for you to make sure that you’re really enjoying what you do. You’re a long time working and if you absolutely hate the work and it’s affecting your happiness and mental health, you might want to rethink things. Not only that, but you may find that you want to consider what will be a better fit for you.

It could be as simple as moving companies to a better environment, but it may even be that moving industries or starting a whole new path altogether is better for you. It’s okay to do this at any age. When you feel more suited to a role, company, or career path, you’ll be so glad that you made the change.

Invest In Your Growth

Something that will help you to achieve your goals, allow you to grow, and make you feel like you’re progressing in your career is actually investing in training, courses, and education. It could be as simple as getting your latest certificate in your field or doing something extra like reasonable suspicion training for supervisors to add a new string to your bow. But it could also be more.

Maybe you want to go back to school and get your PhD? It could be that you really want to be able to get to the next level or get a promotion that you know you need more for. This could be the best investment you ever make in yourself.

Go With The Flow

Finally, you are definitely going to just want to see what happens. Put yourself out there and welcome opportunities. Network with others and just see what happens. As much as you have goals, you won’t always know how you will achieve them. Sometimes, things happen when you least expect them so it’s a good idea not to be too rigid with your definition of success or how you’re going to get there. Just let yourself enjoy the work that you do because the journey is what it’s all about, not the destination.

As much as you may feel like you’re in a race to win and get to the top of the career ladder, you’re not. It’s okay to slow down or change paths. It’s okay to want to try new things and give back. It’s okay to just do things at your own pace. Just remember that you can do things your own way in your own time and still find the successes that you want.

Because defining success is such a personal thing. So set those goals, work out what steps you want to take next, and get excited about your career path again. Most of all, have fun and enjoy it!
