Qatar's Emir Completes Changing of the Guard with New Prime Minister and Interior Minister

Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has announced major changes to his government, including the naming of a new prime minister and interior minister.

The previous prime minister and interior minister, Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani, resigned from his post, paving the way for Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani to take over as head of government.

The new prime minister is an economist and is the same age as the Emir, while the new interior minister has previously served in the Lekhwiya internal security force.

The changes are being seen as the completion of a changing of the guard in the wealthy Gulf state. Qatar's growing wealth, built on massive natural gas reserves, has brought huge changes to the tiny state and its international profile, including hosting the World Cup and seeking a greater diplomatic and mediation role in geopolitical disputes.

The latest changes also include Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed bin Saud Al Thani becoming chairman of the Qatar Investment Authority, one of the world's biggest sovereign wealth funds. Defence Minister Khalid bin Muhammad Al-Attiyah becomes deputy prime minister in the new government.

While the Shura Council holds legislative power and can endorse state policies and budgets, it has no jurisdiction over critical areas such as defence, internal security, economics, and investment policy in the gas-rich country, which prohibits political parties.

Qatar has become a major player in the world of sports, hosting major events such as the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The country has invested heavily in sports infrastructure and has a strong commitment to promoting physical activity and healthy living.

Doha has pursued an independent foreign policy, mediating conflicts and playing a diplomatic role in several major international disputes.

Qatar is also known for its unique cultural heritage, which is a blend of traditional Arab, Islamic, and modern Western influences. The country has a thriving arts scene, with museums, galleries, and cultural centers showcasing both local and international talent.
