7 Steps To Get A Raise Without Asking For One

Earn nicely, spend wisely, and live happily — well, that’s how most people expect to live their life. But as it turns out, things aren’t always easy for everyone. Especially when you’re up for a promotion or a raise. According to a recent survey conducted by Payscale — more than 50% of the workers say that they never asked for a raise, more than 30% workers say that they got a raise without asking for it, and more than 25% workers say that they feel too uncomfortable to ask their employers for a raise.

In today’s competitive economy, where everyone is working hard to move ahead in their career and get the best salary package, it’s almost impossible to act like you don’t need a raise and still manage to get the one that you deserve. However, if you want to be one of the happy folks who doesn’t ask for a raise because they don’t need to, follow these seven easy steps:

1. Go beyond standard skills, learn about the industry, competition, latest trends, and challenges

When it comes to professional development, be a sponge. Soak up everything you can about the company, the industry, the current competition, the latest technology or the trending project management software, and most importantly, the biggest challenges. Improving your knowledge and putting it into practice for the greater good of the organization is an excellent way to show your value at work. Going beyond the standard skills and getting on top of knowing things shows that you know how to do your job, why you are doing it, and what makes it so important.

2. Instead of waiting for someone else’s instruction, be proactive

Almost anybody can do what they’re told to — there is nothing special about it. If you want to create an impression in front of your boss and managers, you will have to become proactive. That means if you see task needs doing or an issue that needs to be resolved, do it before someone asks you to do the same. People appreciate a good vision more than anything, especially bosses. They appreciate when their employees make decisions that are useful to the company over the long term. So, figure out how you can make a difference and let your boss know it through your proactive actions.

3. Work on your workplace relationships

In a workplace environment, it’s guaranteed that, at some point, you will have to work with people you don’t like or can’t relate to. Now, you can’t really expect to impress your boss when you don’t have a good working relationship with your colleagues. Moreover, if your boss is evaluating your performance, it’s unlikely that he or she will consider how good are your people skills. That’s why it is extremely important that you maintain a good working relationship with everyone that comes within your professional circle. Make an effort to get to know the people around you — it will help you to ensure that your projects, as well as your career, stay on track.

4. Go and get trained on your own

Typically employees wait for their managers or bosses to send them to training sessions and workshops to work on their skills. But it doesn’t have to be that way. To blow your boss’s mind, you have to consider the idea of pursuing pieces of training on your own time. Fortunately, there are plenty of free (and almost free) online courses and training programs that you can try yourself. Just think about it, while everyone else in your team is waiting for the company to send them to training, you’ve already done it all on your own. Now, this kind of initiative and dedication to work is always appreciated as well as rewarded.

5. Instead of always giving answers, start asking questions

It surely feels great to answer your boss’s on the spot, every time. But if you really wish to create an impression, you also have to ask a few questions. Sure, asking questions can make you feel a little vulnerable, but if you ask the right question, your boss will definitely appreciate your enthusiasm. Above all, it’s important, to be honest, and ask questions when you don’t understand something. Don’t just pretend to understand — it will only waste yours and other person’s time.

6. Always be the one who remains calm in a crisis

When something goes wrong or a serious situation arises at work, make sure that you’re the one who remains calm. Of course, it would be the toughest thing to do. But when you stay in control of your emotions, you will be able to think clearly about what happened and what needs to be done. This will bring out your leadership potential and improve your chances of getting your boss’s attention.

7. Don’t try to cover up their mistakes, bring them to light yourself

Mistakes happen. Everyone, even the star performer of a team make mistakes. Now, instead of covering up their mistakes, bosses expect employees to take accountability for their actions. So, when you make a mistake, instead of fearing the repercussions, own it. Just have a solution ready and tell your boss that you have got everything under control. When you do this, you will definitely stand out by showing your boss (and others) that you are accountable, proactive, and capable of handling almost any situation.

Remember that these are simple steps to guide you through the process., not a blueprint. The final decision of whether or not you get a raise depends on numerous other factors that are often out of your control. The financial standing of the organization and the policies/procedures followed by the company are a few factors that decide how or when you will be getting a raise. However, following the above steps will definitely improve your chances of getting a well-deserved raise.
