Diana Mahrach’s Couture Show Pays Tribute to Author Capote’s Famous Socialites, the “Swans”

As a tribute to the TV series Feud: Capote vs.The Swans, designer Diana Mahrach presented a dress collection called "Black Swan."

The collection transported the enraptured audience into 1960s high society, where power and elegance always went hand-in-hand.

Held right after the recent New York Fashion Show (NYFW) 2024, and under the umbrella of “Diana Mahrach Couture,” the designer “presented” the Fashion For All Fashion Show 2024. As show producer, Diana honored her guests and fellow designers on the runway.

Meanwhile model, singer, and theologist Ava Golban hosted the red carpet, interviewing designers and models front-of-house. The show also welcomed Women’s History Month with a grand homage to timeless grace.

An astonishing one hundred total models cycled through the venue doors featuring looks by Jean Koute (Munich), John Naftali (Panzai), and of course Diana Mahrach Couture. Jean Koute, the winner of the 2023 Best International Luxury Bags New York Fashion Award, combined their unique handbags with several velvet outfits by Diana Mahrach Couture.

Additionally, Jean Koute unveiled their first-ever presented clothing collection which had a very New Age-New York look. John Naftali (Panzai) presented 60 hand-selected highlight looks, which included jaw-dropping dresses and menswear.

Indeed, Diana Mahrach Couture presented two eye-catching and thematic dress collections titled “A Dress to Impress” and “Black Swan”—while brilliantly echoing 1960’s luxury, the show was also a love letter to the swan, a bold and majestic bird native to many places, including New York. And, the reference to socialite swans is because of the recent Feud anthology TV series which focused on the life of writer Truman Capote and his coterie of high society women, whom he dubbed his “swans.”

Of course, the swan is characterized by its long, curved neck, flawless white feathers, and reputation for being proudly territorial and aggressive. So, each outfit in this part of the Mahrach Couture show played off this idea, being stunning and graceful as a swan, while also demanding respect and awe.

For example, Chabeli Peña, Universal Woman for the Dominican Republic 2024, modeled two outfits as a special guest. One look by Jean Koute embraced the spirit of 1960’s innovation, and the other, part of Diana Mahrach Couture’s “Black Swan” dress collection, had a more Middle Eastern motif.

As a result, the show included a diverse range of models on the runway, emphasizing the variety of the human shape. Even many attending guests were wearing outfits by Diana Mahrach Couture. This delivered a message reflective of each designer’s collective attitude towards haute couture—a work of art that can make anybody look stunning.

Since 1995, Diana Mahrach has carefully selected the finest materials, ranging from sheer silks and satins to delicate laces and intricate embroideries. Her artistry and attention to detail have been unwavering, and this show was no exception. As someone who has maintained her primary studio in Manhattan for over 20 years, it is clear that the spirit of New York City is woven directly into her work

Overall, the show had a warm, friendly, and authentic atmosphere, rarely seen in shows of this scale. The cherry on top was the entertainment, including a musical performance by Giada Valenti wearing a stunning dress by Diana Mahrach Couture, and then a song and dance number by Neda Zehra. The show was closed with an emotional speech from a representative of the White House, Dr. Christine Warnke, and then a heartwarming speech by designer Diana Mahrach herself.

As a fan of both fashion and history, I love the homage to Truman Capote's 'swans' in Diana Mahrach's latest collection. It's refreshing to see designers draw inspiration from such iconic figures and eras. Can't wait to see more from Jean Koute and John Naftali too!
