Tips for Installing and Replacing Your New Kitchen Sink

Enhance the look and functionality of your kitchen by installing a brand new kitchen sink.

While you might not be up for a complete kitchen renovation, a new kitchen sink can add a fresh new feel to space and enhance the complete feel of your kitchen space.

Whether your sink is old and rusted or you need to upgrade to a swanky new style of silk, replacing and installing a new sink can be done with a little bit of DIY and a few hours of work if you know-how.

HOW TO REPLACE AND INSTALL A NEW KITCHEN SINK

Before you get started you will need to find out the size of the sink you are replacing to ensure your new sink will fit into the existing cabinetry, take the time to measure up, and check it will be a good fit before you head out and purchase any new hardware. Once you have the measurements, you are ready to get started on your sink project.

Step 1: Work out What Hardware Needs Replacing

When you are replacing and installing a new sink, you might need to consider if you need to also replace the tapware and any other hardware within the sink. Often if you replace the sink but leave the old tapware, it looks a little mismatched and dated, so take the time to examine what works for the look of your new sink.

Step 2: Remove the Old Sink

You can do this in a few simple steps. Firstly you should turn off the water at the wall, and ensure there is no more water pressure in the tap, then disconnect the supply lines, use a screwdriver to loosen the sink from underneath, use a cutter to cut any of the old silicone caulking to help loosen the sink and then remove it out of the space when it is free. You might need an extra set of hands for this removal, depending on how long the sink has been in place.

Step 3: Install the New Sink in Place

Now you have the space free to install the new sink you should pop the new sink in the hole to check it is a good fit. Once you determine the sink will fit, then you can attach it to the countertop and also attach the strainer as well in the sink drain. You will also need to add gaskets to the new sink.

Step 4: Screw in the Sink

Once you have fixed everything in place and attached everything you need, you can then start permanently fixing the sink in place so it won’t move. You will need to screw it in place and also seal it in place using silicone or caulk.

Step 5: Attach the Taps and Fixtures

The final step in the process is to attach any taps, or soap dispensers to the sink and also reattach the water supply ahead of testing the water to ensure there are no leaks. You should ensure that the sink is secure, firmly in place and the water is flowy properly with the correct pressure.

SUMMING UP

If you think that installing a new sink could be a little out of your scope, always consider the professional support of a licensed plumber to give you a hand. While DIY projects are always a good challenge, if the thought of installing your own sink is not ideal, asking a licensed and insured plumber is always a great way to ensure you get a quality solution quickly and without any issues.
