British-Irish actor Sir Michael Gambon has passed away at the age of 82, his family announced on Thursday.

He is known for his iconic portrayal of Albus Dumbledore in six of the beloved Harry Potter films.

Gambon's illustrious career spanned several decades, earning him four television BAFTAs and an Olivier award. He showcased his remarkable talent across various mediums, including television, film, radio, and theatre. However, it was his role as the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry that endeared him to millions of fans worldwide.

"We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon," said a statement released on behalf of his family.

The statement continued, "Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in the hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia."

Born in Ireland, Gambon's journey in the world of acting commenced in the theatre. He made his stage debut in a production of "Othello" at the Gates Theatre in Dublin back in 1962. His talent and versatility soon gained recognition, and he became renowned in the UK for his role as a French detective in the ITV series "Maigret." Another standout performance was his role as Philip Marlow in Dennis Potter's "The Singing Detective" in 1986.

Gambon's impact extended beyond the small screen. In 2015, he left an indelible mark with his role in the BBC adaptation of JK Rowling's "The Casual Vacancy." His theatrical achievements included appearances in productions like Alan Ayckbourn's "The Norman Conquests," "The Life Of Galileo," and Nicholas Hytner's National Theatre renditions of "Henry IV."

In the realm of cinema, Gambon contributed memorable performances to period dramas such as "The King's Speech" (2010) and "Gosford Park" (2001). However, it was his portrayal of Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter film series that elevated him to global stardom. He took up the mantle in 1997 with "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" and continued to enchant audiences through the franchise's subsequent films.

Sir Michael Gambon's exceptional contributions to the entertainment industry earned him a knighthood in 1998, a testament to his enduring impact.

Following news of his passing, tributes from peers and admirers poured in. Former "Top Gear" presenter Jeremy Clarkson fondly remembered Gambon as a "tremendous guest," even noting that they named a corner on the BBC show's racetrack in his honor.

Sir Michael Gambon's legacy as an actor, mentor, and beloved Dumbledore will forever be etched in the hearts of those who admired his remarkable talent and dedication to his craft.
