What Will Happen to the Queen’s Corgis Following Her Death?

The Duke and Duchess of York will take care of the queen's corgis.

Queen Elizabeth II, who died peacefully at the Balmoral Castle on Thursday 8 September 2022, had a great adoration for corgis.

Her Majesty leaves behind a few of her pets.

The queen owned more than 30 corgis throughout her 70-year reign. Many of them were part of the same bloodline.

Living inside Buckingham Palace, the Queen’s corgis enjoyed a privileged life, residing in their own room in the palace known as the Corgi Room.

They slept in elevated wicker baskets – with sheets refreshed daily – and were tended to by the Queen herself. Their menu was extensive and included fresh rabbit and beef, served by a gourmet chef.

Queen Elizabeth II’s remaining two corgis are called Muick and Sandy. The dogs were described as a ‘godsend’ by the Queen’s former dresser, Angela Kelly. The queen als had other pets.  Her cocker spaniel is named Lissy, and her dorgi goes by the name of Candy.

Her Majesty’s obsession with corgis was no secret, as over the years the breed of dog became synonymous with the sovereign.

It all started in 1933 when then-Princess Elizabeth, aged seven, fell in love with a corgi her father bought, which was named Dookie.

Ever since, Elizabeth - both as Princess and Queen - had corgis throughout her entire life, right up until her death on September 8.

Prince Andrew and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, will now look after the two corgis. This has been confirmed by a spokesperson for the Duke of York.
