8 Ways Hair Loss Can Be Prevented

Hair loss is a worldwide occurrence affecting both men and women.

It's normal for the average person to lose around one hundred hairs each day and new hair grows to replace it. Most people don't notice much except the strands caught in their brush or clogging the shower drain.

What you might notice, however, is when you continue losing hair, but no new ones return. Or, men might see their hairline starting to recede, whereas women may notice thinning across the crown.

So, how can you prevent hair loss? While some hair loss is genetic, there are preventative measures you can take to address hair loss the moment you notice its effects.

1. Vitamin Boost

If you are eating a healthy, balanced diet, you should get all the necessary vitamins and minerals. However, vitamin deficiencies can contribute to hair loss, so you should speak to your doctor about testing for vitamin deficiencies. But there's no harm in taking a multivitamin in the meantime. Biotin (B7), zinc, the rest of the B vitamin family, vitamins C and D, iron, and keratin are all key to hair growth.

2. Hair Loss Medication

There are treatment options to stimulate hair growth, which is ideal if you are dealing with already thinning hair. Some medications are available over the counter, while some require a doctor's assessment before you can purchase them.

3. Healthy Routine

Your hair routine is essential — if you use harsh chemicals, bleach, dye, heating tools, or even hairspray, you could contribute to the problem. Likewise, pulling your hair tight, whether it's due to extensions or braids, can contribute to the problem.

If you use a lot of hair gel or wax, look for products that contain fewer ingredients — the more chemicals in those products, the more risk of hair loss. So, there are small things about your routine you can change to prevent hair loss.

Your daily routine can also help prevent hair loss. Stress can contribute to hair loss, so creating a healthy routine to manage your stress levels is an excellent way to help beat hair loss.

4. Protein Diet

There may also be a link between a lack of protein and hair loss. This is commonly a result of fad diets or vegetarians or vegans who need to consume more protein when they cut meat out. You should consume around 60 grams of protein daily, and if you struggle to fit it into your meals, you can grab a protein shake.

5. Change Your Shampoo

One of the main culprits of hair loss is DHT. This testosterone derivative interferes with the growth cycle; it shortens and shrinks hair, making it easier to break or fall out and harder for it to grow back. Luckily, you can buy anti-DHT shampoo.

6. Scalp Massage

Any massage improves circulation, and your scalp is no different. Regular scalp massages increase blood flow to your scalp and hair follicles, contributing to hair growth. There is another benefit – massage is a great stress reliever, and stress can contribute to hair loss.

7. Hair Transplant

This isn't a preventative measure as it is a solution if your hair loss seriously impacts your life. The process sees follicles from the side and back of the head grafted onto the scalp area in need of help.

8. Warm Showers

You can enjoy a shower as hot as you can stand, but when washing your hair, dial it down and opt for warm water instead. When the water is too hot, it can strip essential oils, damage your scalp, and result in inflammation and dryness. That doesn't necessarily mean hot showers cause hair loss, but the inflammation it causes may contribute to the problem.

Whether you are just noticing the signs of hair thinning or loss or have been dealing with the issue for a while, you have options available. From simple solutions you can try at home to more formal options you can pursue with a professional.
