The Legal Implications of Not Getting Your MOT Done on Time

It is important that motorists get their MOT completed when it is due, but do you know the implications of not getting your MOT done?

Motorists must be aware of the implications so that they never take the risk and avoid landing in hot water.

What Vehicles Need an MOT?

If you own a vehicle that is over 3 years old, you will need to get an MOT done each year. You can get MOT and service packages that can combine the MOT and your car’s servicing, which can take a lot of the stress and simplify the process of maintaining your vehicle.

Car Insurance

Driving without a valid MOT is illegal (more on this below), but you will also find that it invalidates your insurance. This means that you are taking a huge risk by driving a car with an expired MOT and, if you were to get into an accident, then you will be the one picking up the bill (this could be a huge amount if the accident was your fault and others were involved).

Legal Implications

It is illegal to drive without a valid MOT and it could prove to be costly in a few ways. You could face a fine of up to £1,000 and, if the vehicle is seen as unroadworthy, this fine could rise to £2,500 and you could get 3 points on your license. Keep in mind that you could get reported by a member of the public if you do not have a valid MOT - it is unsafe and dangerous for others, so they are in the right to report any motorist that is driving without a valid MOT.

When You Can Drive Without a Valid MOT

Will Blockchain Make Driving Licenses Obsolete

The only time that it is allowed to drive a car without a valid MOT is if you are driving to the garage for a pre-booked MOT at an authorised test centre - you may need to show proof if you are pulled over. This is why it is sensible to book your MOT for a time before your current one has expired just to be safe.

Driving without an MOT is dangerous, reckless, and illegal. As a motorist, it is important that you keep on top of your MOT validity and always book a test in advance of the current certificate expiring. This will ensure that your car is legal, safe and roadworthy at all times throughout the year.
