The Secret To Becoming A Better Manager

No one said management was going to be easy.

Whether you are a newly promoted manager or an experienced one, being in that position of authority is going to make you feel like jumping out of a plane without a parachute. 

Most managers have made their peace with the above-mentioned scenario. However, there are a few (like me) who are constantly looking for ways to step up our management and leadership game at work every day. Fortunately, my experience at ProofHub has taught me a lot about the many facets of management, leadership and running a team successfully.

Be the kind of manager that helps teams deliver quality results, faster.

Striving for greatness as a manager? Is becoming a good manager at the top of your goal list? If that’s the case, then I have a few managerial insights to share. 

The thing is being a manager is an overwhelming experience. And that makes you more likely to adopt bad habits and behaviours amid your busy days. Without the right guidance and insights, I typically see managers (newbie and pros) fall into common behaviour traps like:

  • Setting expectations too high or too low.
  • Not being clear about your goals.
  • Being closed-minded to criticism or new ideas.
  • Making excuses to avoid necessary conversations.
  • Failing to ask for or address your team’s questions, feedback or concerns.
  • Only providing feedback when issues arise or during annual performance reviews.
  • Micromanaging your team rather than trusting them.

Sound familiar? Well, that’s not good. But don’t worry, I have also got a few simple yet proven ways that you can use to avoid such bad management behaviour. Here, have a look:

  • Be an example.

Lead by example and set the pace through your expectations and behaviour. Let your team know that you are the real deal—you say and do the same thing—and encourage others to do the same.

  • Try to be forthcoming with your team.

Listen and communicate with your employees as much as possible. Keep this communication positive and constructive. Tell them how you all can do better. Also, don’t just focus on what’s missing, acknowledge positives too.

  • Don't act like a superman.

Just because you are a manager does not mean you are never wrong. Admit your mistakes and ask the team for help when needed. Let your team see that you know you are one of them.

In closing…

It’s all too easy to fail as a manager. However, if you follow the golden rules of management and offer your team the much-needed transparency, clarity, recognition, reward, and encouragement, you will be good. 

Hopefully, I’ve given you a good idea of where to start. So, go ahead, do your style of management while keeping the above points in mind.
